From the initial conception of the city of Austin in 1839, Austin was chosen by Stephen F. Austin to serve as the Republic of Texas capital city and be its model city dedicated to government activity. Up until 1860 which brought along the invention of the steam engine that allowed trains to connect with the rest of America, Till this day gov’t activity is the largest employment sector in Austin, contributing 19% to Austin’s economic structure.
